1 November: Commemorating What? Here’s a List of National and International Remembrances

November 1 holds different meanings for various groups around the world. There are several important and interesting celebrations observed on this date, both nationally and internationally. In Indonesia, November 1 marks the commemoration of Innovation Day and the 79th Anniversary of the Indonesian Air Force Military Police. Meanwhile, globally, it is World Vegan Day and All Saints’ Day. These celebrations have unique stories and special meanings behind them. Let’s delve into a detailed overview!

Innovation Day in Indonesia is celebrated every November 1. This special day was created to foster innovation spirit among leaders and business players. According to the official Innovation Day Indonesia website, this special day was first proposed by Handi Irawan D., Chairman of the Tera Foundation – the organization behind the Business Records Award (ReBi). The aim of this commemoration is to encourage individuals to continue generating fresh and innovative ideas that have a real impact on the nation’s progress.

In addition, Innovation Day Indonesia also aims to motivate people not to stop at the idea stage but to implement their innovations in real life. This idea stemmed from concerns about the declining innovation spirit among employees, which could make companies struggle to compete in an ever-changing era. Innovation Day Indonesia envisions building an innovative culture across various strata of society, both individuals and companies, to create products and services that enhance the quality of life for the Indonesian people.

Each year, there is a specific theme for the celebration. The theme for the 2025 Innovation Day Indonesia is ‘Indonesia’s Innovation Future: From Idea to Real Impact.’ To celebrate Innovation Day Indonesia, various activities can be organized, including selecting the most innovative employees, creative idea competitions, or launching innovation-based programs in the workplace. Through such activities, the innovation spirit can be continuously nurtured and appreciated.

November 1 is also commemorated as the 79th Anniversary of the Indonesian Air Force Military Police (Puspomau). In 2025, Puspomau celebrates its 79th anniversary. Puspomau plays a crucial role in maintaining discipline and order within the Indonesian Air Force, including conducting criminal investigations, physical security, investigations, and managing detainees and military law violations. Additionally, Puspomau also serves as Aides and Combat Intelligence, and is responsible for issuing military identity cards and permits. The history records show that the Indonesian Air Force Military Police was formed due to the need to ease the workload of the Air Force, which was experiencing a personnel shortage. Therefore, on November 1, 1946, the Air Force leadership established an Emergency Air Force Police School in Yogyakarta to train personnel in military policing.

The establishment date of the school was later designated as the birth date of the Indonesian Air Force Military Police. This special day continues to be commemorated to this day as a historical milestone in the formation of law enforcement officers within the Indonesian Air Force. World Vegan Day is celebrated internationally on November 1, 2025. This celebration serves as a moment to recognize how far the vegan movement has evolved since its inception. Initially known as a plant-based diet trend, veganism has now evolved into a global lifestyle emphasizing care for animals, the environment, and human health. Essentially, the vegan movement rejects all forms of animal products. Therefore, promoting this lifestyle is often done through food, such as delicious vegan recipes and easily accessible plant-based meat and milk alternatives online.

World Vegan Day highlights the significant benefits that can be gained from a plant-based diet. This celebration is marked with enthusiasm across various parts of the world through exhibitions, seminars, culinary festivals, and special promotions in restaurants. As for its history, World Vegan Day originated in 1944 when two members of The Vegetarian Society UK, Donald Watson and Elise Shrigley, chose to separate from the organization. Their reason was that they not only opposed meat consumption but also any products derived from or tested on animals. From there, they founded a new organization called The Vegan Society. Fifty years later, in 1994, Louise Wallis – a British celebrity and Chair of The Vegan Society – designated November 1 as World Vegan Day. This special day was created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Vegan Society. Louise Wallis is also credited with introducing the terms vegan and veganism. November 1 was chosen due to its proximity to Halloween and All Souls’ Day, adding to its symbolic significance. Since then, World Vegan Day has been celebrated globally every year.

On November 1, Christians worldwide commemorate All Saints’ Day. In Western Christian tradition, this holy day is observed by the Roman Catholic Church, the Lutheran Church, the Methodist Church, and various other denominations. The celebration aims to honor all saints – both those officially canonized and those unknown to the public. All Saints’ Day also serves as a form of gratitude for those who have guided others towards a faithful life, such as friends, teachers, or deceased family members.

All Saints’ Day is celebrated with unique traditions in various countries. Some observe it with pilgrimages and flower placements on graves, while in Mexico, it is known as Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos), starting on November 1 to remember deceased children. In the United States and Canada, Halloween, celebrated the day before, also has roots in the All Saints’ Day commemoration. The global observance of All Saints’ Day began on May 13, 609 or 610 AD when Pope Boniface IV dedicated a special day to the Virgin Mary and all martyrs. This date was chosen to align with the Eastern church’s existing day of commemoration. During the papacy of Pope Gregory III (690-741 AD), he moved this celebration to November 1 in the Western Church calendar. He established an oratory at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican to honor the apostles, saints, martyrs, and ‘all the righteous who have been perfected in the world.’ Since then, this date has been designated as All Saints’ Day in the liturgical calendar.Over time, many church leaders and influential figures have pushed for this celebration to become an official observance in various Christian denominations. Today, the observance is known by various names such as Hallowmas, Feast of All Saints, or All Saints’ Day, depending on the tradition and region. Thus, the aforementioned list includes important and interesting days commemorated on a national and international scale on November 1, 2025. We hope this is insightful, fielders!
