China has raised concerns about Europe’s proposal to reapply sanctions against Iran in response to the country’s nuclear program. The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiaku, stated that the current situation regarding the Iran nuclear issue is delicate and requires careful consideration. He emphasized that unilateral actions such as snapback sanctions could escalate tensions and make the situation more challenging to resolve.
Guo Jiaku criticized the plan as not being constructive and urged all parties involved to seek dialogue and peaceful solutions. China has been a proponent of maintaining the Iran nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which was established in 2015. The agreement aimed to restrict Iran’s nuclear capabilities in exchange for lifting economic sanctions. China believes that upholding the JCPOA is crucial for promoting stability and security in the region.
The United States, under the Trump administration, withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018, leading to increased tensions between Iran and the international community. Despite this, China has consistently advocated for the preservation of the agreement and has urged all parties to fulfill their obligations. Guo Jiaku reiterated China’s commitment to finding a diplomatic resolution to the Iran nuclear issue and emphasized the importance of multilateral cooperation.
China’s stance on the Iran snapback sanctions aligns with Russia’s position, as both countries have expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of such measures. Russia, like China, has emphasized the need for dialogue and negotiation to address the complexities surrounding Iran’s nuclear program. The European countries pushing for the snapback sanctions have faced resistance from China and Russia, highlighting the divisions within the international community.
As tensions continue to escalate, China has reiterated its call for all parties involved to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could further destabilize the region. The Chinese government has emphasized the importance of upholding diplomatic channels and engaging in meaningful dialogue to resolve the Iran nuclear issue peacefully. China’s diplomatic efforts aim to prevent further escalation and promote stability in the Middle East, underscoring the country’s commitment to peaceful conflict resolution.
