Brazil’s Decreased Connectivity: Airlines Reduce Network, Leaving Cities Without Flights

Brazil has over 500 public airports, but only 137 had commercial flights in July, marking a decline from 155 in the same month of 2024 and 162 in 2023. This reduction of over 15% in just a couple of years is limiting flight coverage despite the expansion in passenger volume, which reached a historic record of 11.6 million in July. The difficulties faced by civil aviation are shrinking flight network coverage. Airlines constantly adjust flight offerings based on demand, seasonality, and other factors. The contraction of destinations occurred in March, with 154 airports recording landings and takeoffs of commercial flights, as reported by the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac). This number was 163 in March 2023. The three largest airlines in the country resorted to Chapter 11, equivalent to bankruptcy protection in the US, due to high indebtedness and the need for capital to sustain operations hit by pandemic losses. Latam filed in 2020, finalizing restructuring in two years, while Gol went through the process between May 2024 and last June. Azul began its process in late May. All aimed to reduce costs and adjust fleets to obtain resources and cut debts. This adjustment impacts flight offerings and destinations. After going through this phase, Latam and Gol resumed their growth. Now it’s Azul’s turn. Under the recovery plan, Azul is seeking $1.6 billion in financing, along with up to $950 million in funding to cut over $2 billion in debts, including a 35% reduction in the future fleet. Azul temporarily suspended operations at 14 airports in February and March, with the company being the sole carrier in 13 of them. According to the airline, there was an imbalance between revenue and costs in those markets. Meanwhile, they increased frequencies in more efficient fleet-utilization destinations. The strategic adjustment aims to enhance profitability and cash flow with a unified network, monopolizing more than 83% of routes without direct competition, generating over 70% of revenue.
