India Asserts Independence from the US as an Ally

Ironically, Donald Trump’s actions have prompted a significant shift in India’s foreign policy, long overdue according to many. For almost thirty years, India has played a secondary role to the United States, starting with the Vajpayee government, through Manmohan Singh’s administration, and into Modi’s term. However, Trump’s imposition of high tariffs on three BRICS members, including India, has forced the Indian government to reassess its relationship with the US. This may just be the catalyst India needs to assert its independence on the global stage.
