After the dismissal of Pheu Thai, Thailand welcomed a new prime minister. According to Xinhua News Agency, Anutin, the leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, won a majority of votes in the House of Representatives on the afternoon of September 5 and will be the new prime minister.
The Bhumjaithai Party and Phalang Pracharath Party nominated Anutin and Chai-Gern as candidates for the election. According to the Thai constitution, a prime ministerial candidate needs the support of over half of the 492 current members of the House of Representatives to be elected. Anutin will be the 32nd prime minister of Thailand and the third since the 2023 elections.
Zhou Shixin, Director of the Southeast Asia Research Center at the Shanghai Institute of International Studies, told a journalist from Yicai that with the new prime minister in place, the likelihood of major political turmoil in Thailand has decreased. However, the new government will still face complex power balance issues, and there are uncertainties regarding the policy direction and future governance of the country.
