Ethiopia officially inaugurated the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on Tuesday, the largest hydroelectric dam in Africa. The construction of the 5,150-megawatt (MW) hydroelectric project began in 2011 on the Blue Nile River, near the border with Sudan. The GERD is expected to have a significant impact on Ethiopia’s energy production and economic development. Despite its potential benefits, the dam has caused tension between Sudan, Ethiopia, and Egypt due to concerns over water rights and downstream effects.
