The SP Open is hosting one of the main young promises of Brazilian tennis. Nauhany Silva, also known as Naná Silva, defeated Carol Meligeni in the tournament’s opening match (2 sets to 1, 6/7, 6/2, and 6/0) and became the first player born in 2010 to triumph in a WTA level tournament (the SP Open is a WTA 250), at the age of 15. The athlete from São Paulo reached the tournament after an important journey: she played in all four Grand Slam events in the junior category last season. This included a victory at Wimbledon, the first Brazilian win in the category in seven years, against the American Maya Iyengar.
