This morning (September 11), the State Council Information Office held a series of themed press conferences on ‘high-quality completion of the 14th Five-Year Plan’, introducing the achievements in health development during the 14th Five-Year Plan.
According to reports, by 2024, the average life expectancy in China will reach 79 years, an increase of 1.1 years compared to 2020, with improvements in maternal and infant mortality rates.
What is life expectancy?
Shi Renbing, director of the Institute of Population and Policy Studies at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, explained that life expectancy is a hypothetical value, indicating the average number of years a person born in a certain period could expect to live if the mortality rates at different ages remain constant during that period.
In simple terms, life expectancy is the average number of years a newborn in a year could expect to live if subject to that year’s mortality rates across all age groups, calculated by various statistics, health conditions, and socio-economic factors.
During the press conference, it was highlighted that as of 2024, the life expectancy of the Chinese population has reached 79 years, showing significant progress in health indicators like maternal and infant mortality rates.
Moreover, eight provinces and cities including Guangdong have exceeded an average life expectancy of 80 years, reflecting improved healthcare services and overall well-being.
The continuous improvement in maternal and infant mortality rates indicates the effectiveness of policies and healthcare initiatives in ensuring the well-being of women and children, contributing to the overall increase in life expectancy in China.
