Referee who made mistake against Flamengo will be cut from sub World Cup

Conmebol has requested Fifa to exclude referee Andres Rojas from the U-20 World Cup to be held in Chile. The reason was the mistake in the Flamengo x Estudiantes game in which he sent off Flamengo’s Plata after he was kicked on the foot. Therefore, Rojas being cut from the global competition is certain as continental confederations choose their representatives.
In the VAR video, Conmebol had already admitted the referee’s mistake. The VAR could not interfere as it was a yellow card offense and a foul on Plata outside the box, as the audios show.
After Flamengo’s request, the entity annulled the red card’s effect on Plata for the next match against Estudiantes.
The U-20 World Cup is set to take place in Chile between late September and early October. Participation in the tournament is a reward for the referee. Conmebol has already requested Rojas’s exclusion due to the error, and this will be fulfilled by Fifa. Rojas will be replaced by another referee.
There is no decision on Rojas’s participation in the following Libertadores matches. However, the trend is that he will not officiate more games, as Conmebol has requested his exclusion from the World Cup.
After the match, Flamengo’s board, coach, and players complained about Rojas’s refereeing. There was a formal protest from the Rio de Janeiro club.
