Germany’s Dilemma on Recognizing Palestine: Increasing Pressure

France, Belgium, and other Western countries are hoping to recognize Palestine at this week’s United Nations General Assembly. Last Sunday, the UK, Canada, Australia, and Portugal took this step. Their goal is to pressure Israel to end the conflict in Gaza and initiate a new peace process. Among the 193 member states of the UN, about 150 have already recognized Palestine. With France, the UK, and Canada taking action, three heavyweight countries in the G7 have also joined the ranks. For the Palestinian National Authority, recognition by these heavyweight countries means an increase in prestige; for Israel, it signifies a diplomatic setback, especially with the ongoing escalation in Gaza.
