Alaa Abd el-Fattah, a British-Egyptian activist who was imprisoned for ‘spreading false news,’ has been granted a pardon after serving the majority of the last 12 years in custody. His lawyer confirmed the news to the press. Abd el-Fattah rose to prominence as a vocal advocate for democracy and an influential blogger in the midst of the Egypt Uprising in 2011. During his time in detention, he became a symbol of resistance against the authoritarian regime in Egypt. His release marks a significant development for human rights in the region
