President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) mentioned the condemnation of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) during the opening speech at the UN General Assembly debates on Tuesday (23). ‘False patriots plot and publicly promote actions against Brazil. There can be no peace with impunity,’ the president argued. ‘Just a few days ago, for the first time in our 525-year history, a former head of state was convicted for attempting to undermine the Democratic Rule of Law,’ the PT member recounted. ‘He was investigated, indicted, tried, and held accountable for his actions in a thorough process. He had ample right to defense, a prerogative that dictatorships deny their victims,’ the president stated.
