At least two people died and two others were injured after a sniper attack on a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in Dallas, Texas. The attack occurred on Wednesday morning while ICE agents were transporting a group to the detention center. According to Dallas Police, a man with a rifle, believed to be the perpetrator, was found dead on the roof of an immigration lawyer’s office nearby. Authorities are investigating the possibility of multiple shooters collaborating in the attack.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a suspect opened fire on a government building from an adjacent location. Two people were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds. One victim died at the scene. The suspect was also pronounced dead by the police. The wounded individuals were reportedly detainees, not ICE agents, as confirmed by ICE deputy director Madison Sheahan.
The ICE facility in Dallas has been a target for pro-immigration protesters in recent months. In August, a man was arrested for threatening ICE agents with what he claimed was an explosive backpack. The ICE Field Office in Dallas, along with the immigration enforcement office, is housed in this facility.
ICE, under President Trump’s administration, has been carrying out immigration raids in line with his campaign promises. Despite the violence, Governor Greg Abbott reassured that the efforts to detain and deport undocumented immigrants will continue. Following previous attacks on ICE facilities, extra security has been deployed in vulnerable locations.
The incident in Dallas comes after an attack on a Border Patrol facility in McAllen, Texas, where a gunman opened fire before being neutralized. Similar incidents highlight the challenges faced by enforcement agencies dealing with immigration issues in the US. Investigations into the motives behind the attacks continue as authorities work to ensure the safety of all personnel and detainees at these facilities.
