UN Security Council Considers Russia and China’s Attempt to Delay Sanctions on Iran

Russia and China are making a last-minute attempt to delay sanctions on Iran, a move that is not expected to gather enough support among the 15-member UN Security Council. If approved, the sanctions would freeze Iranian assets abroad, stop arms deals with Tehran, and punish any advancements in Iran’s ballistic missile program. These measures would add more pressure on Iran’s struggling economy. The United Kingdom, Germany, and France, also referred to as Iran’s few and closest allies, will play a crucial role in the decision-making process at the Council.
