Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov addressed the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 27, 2025, stating that Russia was not involved in the recent drone activities over NATO countries in Europe. European nations have blamed Russia for a ‘hybrid attack.’ Lavrov dismissed allegations of Russia planning an attack on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union, citing President Putin’s previous denial of such provocations. The minister’s speech was delivered to a less crowded assembly but with more delegations in attendance compared to the previous day’s session with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Lavrov stepped in for Russian President Vladimir Putin, who faces an international arrest warrant that prevented his presence at the UN assembly. Lavrov also issued a warning, stating, ‘any aggression against my country will be met with a decisive response.’ This remark was directed at NATO amid reports of airspace violations by Russia in European countries. NATO countries accuse Russia of a ‘hybrid attack’ in Europe, prompting discussions on establishing a ‘drone wall’ for defense against Eastern threats. The recent surge in drone activities across Europe has raised concerns and prompted urgent actions by European leaders. The threat of unidentified drones flying over strategic points in Europe has heightened security alerts.
Meanwhile, in Denmark, a set of unknown drones was spotted over the country’s largest military base, Karup, adding to the escalating drone incidents in the region. Following these events, Eastern European Defense Ministers are prioritizing the establishment of an ‘anti-drone wall’ to enhance tracking and interception capabilities. The issue of drones will be central in discussions among EU leaders this week in Copenhagen. German Defense Minister Alexander Dobrindt noted the increased risk from unidentified drones over European territories and emphasized the need for defensive measures by the German military.
European Union representatives emphasize the urgency of the ‘anti-drone wall’ project to combat growing security threats. Leaders from ten Eastern border countries have agreed to centralize efforts in collaboration with Ukraine and NATO. The focus is on implementing an effective drone detection system, drawing insights from the Ukrainian conflict experience. Despite plans for the wall, details on operational mechanisms and funding remain pending approval. European leaders are strategizing on industrial and financial strategies to back the ambitious project. The EU Commission and member states are working towards building a defense alliance with Ukraine for drone production, following experiences from Russia’s conflict with Ukraine.
As part of the defense reinforcement measures, the Danish military is deploying mobile radar systems around key military bases, including Amager near Copenhagen and the Swedish border. Efforts are underway to enhance drone detection and neutralization capabilities. Denmark has also accepted help from Sweden to bolster drone defense during the upcoming European leaders’ summit. The recent drone incidents in Denmark echo similar events in Poland and Romania, highlighting the regional security challenges. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen attributed the drone activities to hybrid warfare tactics, pointing fingers at Russia as the source of security threats in Europe.
