The 2-2 draw between Fluminense and Sport on Wednesday night was marred by controversy. The play that led to the penalty and the second goal of Fluminense caused a lot of disagreement and continues to generate discussion behind the scenes. Sport is considering requesting the annulment of the match, valid for the 26th round of the Brasileirão, due to an alleged ‘error of law’ by the referees.
The VAR called referee Raphael Claus to review two key plays. In the first half, during the disallowed Fluminense goal, Sport complains about Ignácio not being sent off. In the second half, with the play that justifies Sport’s review and the potential annulment request, Claus indicated a foul by Ignácio on Pablo (confirmed by him in the conversation with VAR). He was then called by VAR for a review and awarded a penalty for the Tricolor defender.
In an interview published by Globo Esporte, Raphael Campos, vice president of Sport, commented on the plays. He mentioned that the VAR and Claus made a mistake that should not have been intervened in, as it was related to a judgment error. They are currently consulting the legal team for further action.
According to article 259 of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice, annulment is only allowed in the case of a legal error, referring to a possible incorrect interpretation or application of the rules of the game. These recent incidents have sparked debates within the NetFlu community, with fans and experts discussing the implications and potential consequences of such controversial decisions in football matches.
