George Russell dominated the Singapore GP and secured his second victory of the season and fifth of his career. Max Verstappen finished second with Red Bull, facing a lot of pressure from Lando Norris of McLaren in the final laps. The Dutchman, however, managed to stay ahead and completed three consecutive races scoring more points than McLaren.
The race that gave the British team the constructors’ title with six races in advance was marked by a touch between the championship leaders at the start, with leader Oscar Piastri, fourth in the race, leaving irritated by Norris’ aggressiveness. The Australian is still ahead, with a 22-point advantage, but lost 14 points to Norris and 41 to Verstappen in the last three races.
How is the title fight going?
1 – Oscar Piastri (McLaren): 324 points
2 – Lando Norris (McLaren): 299 points
3 – Max Verstappen (Red Bull): 255 points
4 – George Russell (Mercedes): 212 points
Gabriel Bortoleto finished 17th: the Brazilian’s race was complicated by a collision with Lance Stroll on the first lap, after a poor start. This broke his front wing, forcing him to pit early for a change. He made up for the 11s loss from the stop due to the wing change, but then adopted a good pace and returned to contention, even reaching 13th place, but in the final laps suffered a lot with the tire and lost positions.
The atmosphere heated up between title contenders
The race started hot for the title contenders and McLaren teammates: Lando Norris had a better start than Oscar Piastri but passed the championship leader by touching with the Australian, who found the maneuver too aggressive for a teammate. Piastri, who has strong support this weekend from Australians in the stands at Singapore, asked for team intervention and was told they would talk after the race, and that he should focus on what he could control. ‘It’s not fair,’ he said.
Even with damage to the front wing, Norris began to pull away from the Australian and focus on those ahead: Max Verstappen, who had started with softer tires and was significantly slower than the leader Russell. The British Mercedes driver was already over 9 seconds ahead after the first 20 laps.
Verstappen struggling to stay on track
Despite running in second, Verstappen complained a lot about the car. During the pit stops, Red Bull managed to pit before McLaren and cover the attempt to use strategy for Norris to overtake the Dutchman. Verstappen seemed to be struggling a lot with the car, going off track twice and allowing Norris to get closer. ‘Man, it’s undriveable,’ he complained via radio.
However, the Dutchman managed to stay ahead, with Norris in third and Piastri in fourth. Antonelli, Hamilton, Leclerc, Alonso, Bearman, and Hadjar completed the top 10. The next F1 race will be in two weeks in the United States, at the Austin circuit.
