Gaza, 2 Years: What If the War Happened in Brazil or Rio? Infographics Reveal Impact of the Conflict

The war in Gaza, which marks two years this Tuesday, has devastated the enclave. The conflict has killed over 67,000 people, injured nearly 170,000, and reduced the territory’s infrastructure to rubble. Gaza is a small territory, with only 365 km²—slightly over a quarter the size of Rio de Janeiro—but highly populated, with around 2.2 million residents, nearly half of whom are children and teenagers. Over the past two years, Gaza has been hit by 85,000 tons of explosives, surpassing targets in Europe during World War II. It is estimated that the volume of construction waste is 14 times greater than that of all armed conflicts worldwide since 2008. What would a similar tragedy mean if it happened in Brazil or Rio de Janeiro? To grasp the impact, we compared Gaza’s reality with proportional numbers from Brazil and Rio, using official data from organizations like the UN, the Brazilian Health and Labor Ministries, and the International Federation of Journalists.
