Amid the escalating economic war between the United States and China, Europe is also becoming increasingly concerned about the impact. The German government has expressed ‘serious concern’ over the rare earth and critical materials export restrictions imposed by China, seen as a signal of growing geopolitical tensions and their impact on global supply chains. China recently expanded its export restrictions on rare earths and strategic elements, adding 5 categories to the existing 17 elements, meaning the ban now covers all heavy rare earth metals except for 5. These metals form the basis of key technologies such as high-performance magnets, semiconductors, and precision military systems. Customs data compiled by Bloomberg shows that South Korea, Japan, the United States, Germany, and Canada are the main importers of these materials, which have become a focal point of global trade disputes.
