Egypt raises fuel prices for the second time this year

Cairo, Oct 17 (AP) – Egypt raised fuel prices by approximately 12% on Friday, a move expected to result in higher costs for goods and services across the country. This marks the second fuel price increase this year. In a statement published on Facebook, the Egyptian government cited rising global oil prices as the main reason for the hike. With a heavy reliance on fuel subsidies, the price hike aims to reduce budget deficits and align domestic prices with international markets.

The previous fuel price adjustment earlier this year sparked protests and criticism among Egyptians, many of whom struggle with the high cost of living. The government is facing challenges in managing public discontent while implementing economic reforms to stabilize the economy. The new price increase is likely to fuel further discontent among citizens already grappling with inflation and economic hardships.

Despite the backlash, the government reiterated its commitment to gradually reducing fuel subsidies to alleviate the burden on the state budget. The move comes as Egypt seeks to secure a $5.2 billion funding agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to support economic recovery efforts. The IMF has stressed the importance of subsidy cuts to improve fiscal sustainability and reduce public debt in the long term.

As fuel prices continue to rise, Egyptians are bracing for potential impacts on transportation costs and basic commodities. The government faces the challenge of balancing the need for economic reforms with the concerns of a population already strained by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The fuel price hike reflects Egypt’s ongoing efforts to address economic imbalances and bolster its financial stability in the face of global economic uncertainties.
