Regretful CIo for Indonesia’s veto of Israeli gymnasts

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) expressed regret over Indonesia’s decision to ban Israeli athletes from participating in the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, despite intense efforts made by the international body to reverse the decision. Israeli Gymnastics Association president said, ‘It’s a shame that sports are mixed with politics. Our athletes should not be the victims of such actions.’ Israel was ultimately unable to compete in the championships held in Jakarta due to Indonesia’s visa denial. The IOC highlighted the principle of non-discrimination in sports and the need to separate sports from political conflicts. The Israeli Gymnastics Association criticized Indonesia’s move as going against the Olympic spirit of unity and peace through sport. The IOC called for respect of the Olympic values and principles, including non-discrimination and fair play. Israel expressed disappointment over not being able to send its athletes to the prestigious event, with the Israeli Sports Minister calling Indonesia’s decision ‘shameful and disgraceful.’ Indonesia’s action was seen as violating the spirit of sportsmanship and inclusivity. The IOC reiterated the importance of ensuring that athletes from all countries are able to compete in international sporting events without discrimination based on nationality or political beliefs.
