139 Indonesian migrant workers (PMIs) were deported from Malaysia to Port Parepare, South Sulawesi. Prior to that, the PMIs had been imprisoned for 4 months in Malaysia.
The arrivals today amounted to 139 people. With regard to the deportation, the Head of the Sulawesi Selatan Manpower Service, Ashari Daud, stated, “All of the 139 have returned to South Sulawesi. 114 of them are from Parepare and the rest are from other regions such as Maros, Bone, and Pangkep.” The repatriation process was carried out in cooperation with the Malaysian authorities.
The repatriated PMIs arrived in Parepare and were welcomed by their families and officials. They were then directed to quarantine facilities as a health protocol measure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Following this, they will undergo further examinations before being allowed to return to their respective hometowns.
In response to their return, Ashari Daud expressed, “We will ensure that they receive complete medical examinations before being reunited with their families. All of them will be given assistance to facilitate their return to their original regions.” This effort is part of the government’s commitment to the welfare and protection of Indonesian migrant workers abroad.
The return of these PMIs emphasizes the importance of collaboration between countries in managing migrant worker issues. By working together, Indonesia and Malaysia aim to ensure the safety and well-being of their respective migrant populations. The repatriation process demonstrates the ongoing efforts to safeguard the rights of migrant workers and provide necessary support for their reintegration into their home communities.
