With over 53% of valid votes, Joel Barroso (PSB) was elected mayor of Santa Quitéria until 2028. The special elections in the city of Santa Quitéria of the countryside of Ceará took place on Sunday (26) with two more competitors: Cândida Figueiredo (União Brasil) and Dra. Lígia Protásio (PT). The election took place amidst tension and involved allies of the state government’s base. Lígia, former vice-mayor of the city, supported by federal deputy José Guimarães (PT), came in second place in the race with 25% of the votes. Between 2020 and 2024, she briefly assumed the position of Mayor after several judicial suspensions of the then mayor, Braguinha (PSB).
