Philippine Firm Faces Allegations of Burying Radioactive Dust

MANILA: SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp. stated they were instructed by the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute to handle 23 cargo containers allegedly filled with radioactive zinc dust that were turned down by Indonesia. The company clarified that they had no involvement in the shipments. The PNRI identified SteelAsia as the source of the materials and required them to bury the containers at their Calaca scrap recycling plant in Batangas province. SteelAsia denied any connection to the radioactive waste, expressing concerns about potential risks to the community and other businesses in the industrial zone if the radioactivity threat is validated.
