Lula predicts agreement with Trump ‘in a few days’ and says: ‘Bolsonaro is in the past’

Lula stated during a press conference in Malaysia that he believes a solution between Brazil and the US will be reached soon. He expressed optimism regarding the meeting, emphasizing his fair demands for Brazil. He explained to Donald Trump that the conviction of former president Jair Bolsonaro was legitimate, within a legal process, and outlined the crimes and evidence presented. Lula described Bolsonaro as a figure of the past in Brazilian politics, underscoring the importance of respectful relations between the two countries based on their presidential roles.

Regarding negotiations with the US, Lula highlighted that political discussions will be limited to the presidents while technical and economic aspects will be handled by negotiators. He stressed the importance of removing the 50% tariffs on Brazilian products entering the US market.

Lula emphasized that no demands were made by Trump during the meeting, but reiterated his stance on the removal of tariffs. Officials from both sides agreed to establish a meeting schedule to achieve a trade deal within weeks. Lula’s team, led by Minister Mauro Vieira, also met with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and White House Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, aiming to solidify commercial agreements.

Reflecting on the meeting with Trump, Lula stressed the necessity of in-person negotiations based on respect. He highlighted the positive relationship between Brazil and the US, focusing on collaborative efforts to ensure mutual benefits in trade and diplomacy. Lula emphasized the importance of face-to-face interactions, rejecting virtual communication for key discussions.

Lula, who turns 80, highlighted his negotiation skills developed through his labor union background and political career. Despite differences, he emphasized the shared responsibility of leaders towards their nations. Regarding international relations, Lula underscored the importance of peace and negotiation rather than conflict, particularly highlighting Brazil’s stance of promoting diplomatic solutions.

In conclusion, Lula expressed readiness to mediate potential conflicts, such as the US-Venezuela tension, and advocated for peaceful resolutions through dialogue and negotiation. He emphasized Brazil’s commitment to maintaining peaceful relations with global counterparts, prioritizing diplomacy and cooperation over confrontation.
