Egypt Monitors Sudan’s Shifts Amid Border Coup Concerns

The recent seizure of El Fasher in western Sudan by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has triggered deep concerns about the already grave humanitarian crisis and the country’s uncertain future. The Russian news channel RT reported that the national unity of Sudan is under serious threat due to this development. With the RSF controlling El Fasher, they have extended their reach across western Sudan, creating a division in power with the army maintaining control in the east. This division has placed Sudan at a critical juncture, increasing volatility along Egypt’s southern border.

Experts are warning about the security implications of the RSF’s presence, particularly led by General Hemedti, in the border triangle between Sudan and Egypt. This presence could potentially facilitate smuggling activities and the movement of extremist groups, particularly in the African Sahel region. Analysts view these events as a ‘strategic turning point’ for Sudan, indicating a possible ‘de facto partition’ in the near future.

There are concerns that Cairo will establish new boundaries regarding Hemedti’s forces, particularly in response to any attempts at division or encroachment on Egyptian territories. Major General Mohamed Abdel Wahid, an Egyptian national security expert, emphasized the significance of El Fasher as a key military base for the Sudanese army and a connection between the country’s eastern and western regions. Its fall to the RSF signifies a major shift in the conflict, marking a turning point in the balance of power in the region.
