Who benefitted from the first meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping in six years?

President of the United States Donald Trump and Chairman of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping held their first face-to-face talks on October 30 in the South Korean city of Busan, marking their first in-person meeting since Trump returned to the White House in January 2025. According to Chinese television reports, the leaders talked for 1 hour and 40 minutes. Prior to this, they awkwardly shook hands. Trump described Xi as a ‘very tough negotiator, and that’s not good’ and emphasized that they know each other fairly well. Later, Trump referred to his counterpart as ‘a great leader of a great country’. Xi, as reported by Xinhua agency, stated that China and the US can jointly achieve success and prosperity, and having disagreements is normal. ‘China’s development goes hand in hand with your desire to make America great again,’ Xi assured, adding that the two countries should be partners and friends. The Chinese leader also believes that they should ensure the confident progress of the ‘giant ship’ of Sino-American relations.
