After Flamengo, it was Palmeiras’ turn to secure their spot in the Copa Libertadores final. The epic comeback against LDU, with a 4-3 aggregate win, sets up the fifth all-Brazilian final in the last six editions of the continental competition. Brazilian dominance in the Libertadores has been evident since 2020, with only one exception in 2023 when Boca Juniors made it to the final but lost 2-1 to Fluminense at the Maracanã.
Flamengo and Palmeiras, the finalists in 2025, have both featured in three finals each. Santos, Athletico Paranaense, Botafogo, Atlético-MG, and the aforementioned Fluminense have each made one appearance. The two clubs with the most final appearances faced off in the 2021 final, with Palmeiras emerging as the victors. The Verdão defeated Flamengo 2-1 at the Centenary Stadium in Montevideo, with Deyverson scoring the winning goal in extra time.
Palmeiras has been the most successful Brazilian club in recent years, clinching titles in 2020 and 2021, while Flamengo, Botafogo, Santos, Athletico, and Atlético-MG have all finished as runners-up. The Brazilian dominance has also positioned the country as the most successful in South America. With another title secured, Brazil will equal Argentina’s record of 25 Libertadores trophies.
The Libertadores final will take place on November 29th at the Monumental Stadium in Lima, Peru. The winner between Palmeiras and Flamengo will become Brazil’s first team to win the tournament four times.
