US Air Force World Medalist Gymnast Stands up for Team Israel Despite Visa Denial

U.S. Air Force Second Lieutenant Patrick Hoopes achieved a lifelong dream by winning bronze in pommel horse at the World Gymnastics Championships in Indonesia. Since beginning gymnastics at two years old while also serving in the military, Hoopes had been working towards this moment. Reflecting on his accomplishment, Hoopes stated, ‘There’s kind of three big things a gymnast growing up in the U.S. wants to compete in; U.S. championships, the Olympics, and then World Championships. So it was kind of a big dream come true.’ Despite minor errors during his routine, Hoopes delivered a stellar performance, securing the coveted title of world medalist. The joy of his victory, however, was overshadowed by an unfortunate event in Indonesia. The government of the host nation denied visas to all members of Team Israel, preventing them from participating in the competition. The decision was made due to safety concerns amid potential protests and the conflict in Gaza. Hoopes expressed his disappointment at the situation, stating, ‘An athlete from any country being denied that for reasons outside of their control is always a pretty disappointing story to hear.’ The move sparked international outrage, with the International Olympic Committee condemning the decision and severing ties with Indonesia regarding future Olympic events. Indonesian Minister of Sport Erick Thohir defended the decision, emphasizing the country’s commitment to security and public order. Hoopes empathized with the Israeli athletes, acknowledging the dedication they had put into their training. He expressed his solidarity with them, highlighting the unfairness of being denied the opportunity to compete after all their hard work. Looking ahead, Hoopes aims to participate in the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, with hopes of sharing the stage with Team Israel gymnasts. He remains focused on his military duties, preparing for the World Military Games in North Carolina in 2027 and upcoming World Championships.
