Young man wakes up from coma, makes surprising revelation and dies

A 22-year-old American man who was soon to be a father woke up from a coma just in time to accuse his 24-year-old pregnant girlfriend of intentionally causing the car accident that left him severely injured in Florida, USA. Daniel Waterman claimed that Leigha Mumby, his pregnant girlfriend, had said, ‘I don’t care what happens. You’re going to get what you deserve,’ moments before driving the vehicle into a tree.
The accident allegedly occurred during an argument while the couple was traveling on a highway in Flagler County on February 9, the night of the Super Bowl. Waterman, who was in the passenger seat, fell into a coma after the impact. According to People magazine, he managed to communicate with investigators months later in May, after waking up from the coma, using a slate. The police would point to letters on the slate and the young man would react by making sounds, forming words to communicate.
From there, he was able to accuse his girlfriend as the one responsible for the accident, according to a police report obtained by the magazine. The man’s mother, Heather Waterman, told Syracuse.com that her son was messaging a friend who, like him, supported a National Football League (NFL) team when the disagreement began.
Court documents indicate that the girlfriend began driving recklessly until violently colliding with a tree. She was also injured but survived, as did the baby she was expecting.
The young man was transferred to a hospital in New York in July after showing signs of improvement but tragically passed away on October 8 due to pneumonia. ‘He never gave up,’ his mother said in a post. Initially charged with reckless driving causing serious bodily injury and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, Mumby now faces vehicular manslaughter charges following Waterman’s death, according to police.
The victim’s family is now trying to obtain custody of the baby, as reported by local media. The young man’s mother vowed to fight in court to prove the child’s paternity and bring the baby to New York, where the family resided. ‘We will do whatever it takes to bring her to us. He wanted her to be raised with his family in New York,’ she said.
