Soccer-Egypt’s Zamalek sack coach Ferrera after four-game winless run

Zamalek have decided to terminate their contract with Belgian coach Yannick Ferrera after a disappointing 1-1 draw against National Bank of Egypt. This result marked Zamalek’s fourth consecutive match without a victory in the Egyptian Premier League. Ferrera, aged 45, who took over in July, had a successful stint in Belgium, winning the Belgian Cup with Standard Liege and securing promotion with Sint-Truiden. He also managed teams in Saudi Arabia. Despite early hopes for Ferrera’s tenure at the 14-time domestic champions, the team struggled to maintain consistent performances. Zamalek currently sits in fourth place in the league table, with 19 points from 11 matches, trailing behind Ceramica Cleopatra by four points and level on points with Al Masry. Previous to his dismissal, the club announced the appointment of former midfielder Ahmed Abdel Raouf as interim head coach following discussions with sporting director John Edward. Abdel Raouf is expected to lead the team through the Egyptian Super Cup, which will take place in the United Arab Emirates later this month. The club is hopeful that the new leadership will bring about a change in fortunes for Zamalek in the league.
