According to Hegseth, three people aboard the vessel died. This is the 16th boat attacked by the country in just over a month – nine in the Caribbean Sea and seven in the Pacific Ocean. So far, according to US government data, 64 people have died. On Friday (31), the United Nations (UN) called on President Donald Trump’s government to stop the attacks on vessels suspected of drug trafficking. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, referred to the attacks on the boats as ‘extrajudicial executions’. ‘These attacks, with their growing human cost, are unacceptable. The United States must cease such attacks and take all necessary measures to prevent extrajudicial executions of people aboard these vessels, regardless of any alleged criminal activity,’ wrote Türk in a statement. This is the first time the UN has spoken out about the operations of Donald Trump’s government near the coasts of Venezuela and Colombia, which began in September.
