Discover the Colossal Grand Egyptian Museum through Images, Inaugurated After Years of Delay

Egypt officially inaugurated the Grand Egyptian Museum on Saturday (1) after years of delay. Dedicated to the Pharaonic civilization, the space cost over $1 billion (around R$ 5.3 billion at the current exchange rate). Among the over 100,000 pieces of Egyptian antiquity, the 5,000 pieces of Tutankhamun’s treasure stand out, gathered for the first time in one place since British archaeologist Howard Carter discovered it in 1922 in a tomb in the Valley of the Kings in Upper Egypt. Discover the new attraction through images.

Architecture
The Grand Egyptian Museum boasts a colossal facade of over 50,000 square meters, which has been illuminated in recent nights as a prelude to the highly anticipated opening. The entrance is pyramid-shaped, and its facade is decorated with pyramid and triangular forms that extend to this grand inner courtyard.

Inside the massive inner courtyard is one of the attractions, the imposing 11-meter statue of Ramses II, who reigned for over six decades more than 3,000 years ago. The statue is located in the atrium of the courtyard, in an area called the Grand Hall. The statue spent half a century in a roundabout in central Cairo before being meticulously transported to the new museum.

Golden Treasures of Tutankhamun
Tutankhamun’s golden sarcophagus is among the 5,000 found by British Egyptologist Howard Carter that will be displayed. Among the pieces are the gold mask, throne, and chariots of the Egyptian pharaoh.

Over 100,000 Artifacts
The Grand Egyptian Museum features pieces from seven millennia of Egypt’s history, spanning from pre-dynastic times to the Greek and Roman eras.

View of the Pyramids
A panoramic window on the museum’s top floor offers visitors an unobstructed view of the Giza pyramid complex.
