Trump threatens to restrict funds to New York City if Mamdani wins

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated on Monday (3) that he will restrict federal funds to New York City if the Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the mayoral election, which will take place on Tuesday (4). If Mamdani wins the election, Trump declared on Truth Social that ‘it is highly unlikely that I will contribute federal funds, beyond the minimum required.’ Referring to the candidate as a ‘communist,’ Trump also said that the city can only ‘get worse with a communist in charge’ and that he, as President, does not want to ‘continue spending good money after bad.’ In his post, the Republican also wrote that New York City will be ‘a complete economic and social disaster if Mamdani wins’ and that he would rather see a successful Democrat win than ‘an inexperienced communist.’ Trump added that a vote for Curtis Sliwa, the Republican candidate, ‘is a vote for Mamdani,’ and that, with no choice, the population should vote for Andrew Cuomo, the former Democratic governor of New York. Surveys show Mamdani leading against former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent after losing to Mamdani in the Democratic primary, and the founder of the Guardian Angels, Curtis Sliwa, who is the Republican candidate.
