The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) has revealed that José (male) and Maria (female) are the most popular names in Brazil, with over 12 million ‘Marias’ and approximately 5 million ‘Josés’. These figures cover records of all residents in the 90.7 million registered households.
The data is part of the IBGE’s name database, including both names and surnames of all residents in the 90.7 million registered households. This marks the first time that the IBGE has released the ranking of the most common surnames in the country, with ‘Silva’ and ‘Santos’ taking the top spots.
