Boeing Faces Civil Trial Over Payouts in Ethiopia Crash Victims’ Case

More than six years after the tragic Boeing 737 Max crash in Ethiopia that claimed 157 lives, the first civil trial related to the incident is about to commence. Most of the wrongful death lawsuits filed by families of the victims have been settled, but two cases are scheduled for trial before a federal court jury soon.

The trial, set in Chicago, where Boeing was previously headquartered, will not delve into the company’s liability as Boeing has already acknowledged responsibility for the two crashes involving the 737 Max. Instead, the jury will determine the compensation owed to the families of Mercy Ndivo and Shikha Garg, two victims of the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crash.

After taking off from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, the fatal crash occurred, leaving behind grieving families. Mercy Ndivo, a young mother, and United Nations consultant Shikha Garg were among those lost in the tragedy, with their families seeking justice through the pending civil trial.

Boeing expressed deep regret for the losses suffered by the passengers and crew members in both crashes, emphasizing its commitment to compensate the families fairly. While the two cases are set to proceed before US District Judge Jorge Luis Alonso, the possibility of an out-of-court settlement remains.

Efforts to mediate settlements for the families have faced challenges, with Chicago lawyer Robert Clifford stressing the importance of achieving justice for the devastated families. The legal proceedings are a culmination of allegations against Boeing regarding the flawed flight-control system that malfunctioned in both crashes.

In light of these developments, the pending agreement between Boeing and prosecutors to avoid criminal prosecution by paying fines and providing compensation highlights the ongoing legal battles faced by the aviation giant. The families of the victims continue to seek closure through the upcoming civil trial.
