Amazonia surpasses 1.5°C above average temperature limit for the first time

The Amazon also stands out in the analysis by states: the largest temperature increase in 2024 was recorded in Roraima: 2°C above average. Amazonas and Mato Grosso do Sul follow closely, both with a 1.7°C rise. According to scientists, this record is just the first milestone of a problem that has been occurring in recent years and is expected to worsen – at least in the short term. Data shows that the average temperature of the Amazon has been increasing by 0.29°C per decade. Since 1985, the Amazon has lost 52 million hectares (-13%) of native vegetation, leading to an average temperature increase of 1.2°C in 40 years.
