Exploring Caci Fights: A Cultural Ritual on Flores Island

When I reach Melo Village, situated 450 meters above sea level, to meet the Manggarai tribe after a 12-day sailing journey with SeaTrek Sailing Adventures, I still feel the lingering sense of being at sea. Part of me wishes I were back on the water. My purpose is to witness the Caci battles, where men use whips to inflict pain, a practice that is foreign to me. However, this ancient Indonesian art form, performed by the Caci fighters on Flores Island, is known to carry immense cultural significance. Initially, the Caci battle was a way to resolve disputes among tribal members regarding land ownership. Today, it is a traditional performance held for various occasions such as weddings, births, funerals, and even in commemoration of Indonesia’s Independence Day. As the showdown commences, I sip on rice wine and chew betel nut, aiming to elevate my spirits. A hush descends over the ‘arena’ as two men armed with whips and shields charge at each other like raging bulls. Their movements gain momentum until one of them leaps into the air, striking his opponent’s shield with the whip. This act symbolizes his virility and offers the promise of new life.
