Despite the US imposing a 50% tariff on India – the highest rate currently levied by the US on any country – and causing relations between the two nations to hit their lowest point in years, experts say one thing is clear: US President Trump favors ‘local manufacturing’ over ‘allied manufacturing’. This week, the US announced an additional 25% tariff on India for its imports of Russian oil, bringing the total tariff on India to 50%. This decision caught most experts by surprise, as New Delhi was one of the first countries to initiate trade talks with Washington, and Trump and Indian Prime Minister Modi have publicly expressed mutual respect, calling each other ‘friends’. Currently, only Brazil, along with India, faces such high tariffs.
