Typhoon Fung-Wong Threatens Philippines and Over 1 Million Leave Their Homes

The supertyphoon was spotted by Filipino government meteorologists before noon on Sunday in the city of Pandan, located in Catanduanes province in the east of the country, where heavy rain and fog hampered visibility. Forecasts indicate that the supertyphoon is expected to move northwest and hit the coast of Aurora or Isabela province by late Sunday or early Monday, according to meteorologists. Typhoon Fung-Wong was detected just three days after another supertyphoon, Kalmaegi, which formed on the 6th and left at least 142 people dead and over 100 missing. Tropical cyclones with sustained winds of 185 km/h or more are classified as supertyphoons in the Philippines, a designation adopted years ago to emphasize the urgency associated with more extreme weather disturbances.
