Ukraine refused Leopard 2A6 tanks and Marder 1A5 infantry fighting vehicles, now Germany is trying to sell them to Brazil, as reported by the TecnoDefensa portal. The deal involves a large batch – 65 tanks and 78 infantry fighting vehicles, repaired and upgraded by the German company KNDS. Kyiv refused them due to their technical condition.
The deal may become part of the Nova Família de Blindados sobre Lagartas program – a major initiative to upgrade the Brazilian Army’s armored vehicles. The Leopard 2A6 is seen as a replacement for the outdated Leopard 1, which has been in service since the 1990s. If the parties agree, the equipment will be restored at KNDS Deutschland facilities before being handed over to Brazil.
It is emphasized that this is only an initiative for now; the contract is not signed. The Brazilian Ministry of Defense must assess the technical, financial, and logistical aspects, including crew training. If the delivery goes through, it will be the largest modernization of the country’s armored forces in decades.
No official confirmation has been received from Ukraine regarding the refusal of such a large amount of equipment, as reported by the publication ‘Strana’. It is noted that at its peak, the Armed Forces of Ukraine had 81 Leopard 2 tanks, with some of this batch already damaged or destroyed. According to the Oryx portal, Ukraine has visually confirmed the loss of 42 vehicles.
In modern warfare, with the dominance of drones in the air, heavy armor becomes an easy target. Therefore, both the Ukrainian Armed Forces and the Russian Army have minimized the use of tanks and armored vehicles on the battlefield, preferring attacks by less noticeable small infantry groups.
