Longest Total Solar Eclipse of the Century Scheduled to Occur

During the event, the Sun will completely disappear behind the Moon, which will be at perigee – the point closest to Earth – appearing larger than usual. At the same time, the Sun will be in a position that makes it appear slightly smaller in the sky, creating the total coverage. The phenomenon will start in the East Atlantic, pass through the Strait of Gibraltar, and reach its peak in Egypt. It can be observed in countries such as Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, and Somalia, among others. A similar event occurred in April 2024. A total solar eclipse was seen in parts of the Pacific, Mexico, the United States, and Canada, lasting about 4 minutes. What is a total solar eclipse? A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon completely blocks the face of the Sun. According to NASA, this phenomenon is rare because the alignment between the Sun, the Moon, and Earth needs to be perfect, which only occurs at specific moments. During totality, it is possible to see the solar corona. This is the outermost and brightest part of the Sun, normally invisible due to the intense light. The total eclipse can only be observed in a narrow strip of Earth. Outside of it, the phenomenon is only partial or not visible. Therefore, Brazil will not be in the path of the 2027 eclipse. How to observe safely? To observe the phenomenon, it is never recommended to look directly at the Sun. The use of certified solar observation glasses (ISO 12312-2) or shade number 14 welder’s glass is mandatory. Telescopes, cameras, and binoculars must also have their filters. According to astronomer Dr. Josina Nascimento, from the National Observatory (ON/MCTI): ‘Under no circumstances should you look directly at the Sun without proper protection. Sunglasses, X-ray plates, or other homemade filters do not protect against damage. It is essential to use certified filters, such as special glasses for solar observation or shade number 14 welder’s glass.’ In addition to protection, it is important that the sky is clear to ensure a good observation of the phenomenon. Due to its rarity, it is considered one of the most beautiful and impressive in astronomy.
