INTERFAX.RU – Peace in the Middle East was the main topic of discussion during a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa during the transitional period, stated the American leader. ‘It was an honor for me to spend time with Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa, the new President of Syria. We discussed all the intricacies of establishing peace in the Middle East, of which he is a major supporter,’ Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social. The US President mentioned he looks forward to a new meeting with his Syrian colleague, emphasizing the importance of a stable and successful Syria for the region. The meeting between the US and Syrian presidents took place on Monday, November 10, at the White House. Western media highlighted that the Syrian leader’s visit to the White House marked the first of its kind since the country gained independence in 1946. On December 8, 2024, the armed opposition in Syria announced the capture of Damascus and the beginning of the formation of transitional governing bodies. In January 2025, Ahmed al-Sharaa became the President of the country for the transitional period in Syria.
