Egypt Achieves Historic Milestone in Eliminating Trachoma as a Public Health Problem

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared that Egypt has eradicated trachoma as a public health problem, marking a significant achievement for both the country and the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region (WHO EMR). Egypt now joins the ranks of seven countries in the WHO EMR that have successfully eliminated trachoma. This validation brings the global total of countries that have eliminated trachoma to 27. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, praised Egypt’s efforts, stating: “I congratulate Egypt for reaching this milestone and liberating its people from trachoma. This demonstrates the effectiveness of sustained national leadership, strong surveillance and community engagement in ending a disease that has afflicted humanity since antiquity.”
