Decline in German Tourists to Majorca Sparks Panic as They Opt for Egypt instead

After an impressive winter tourist season last year, Majorca is facing a worrying slump in its German market for 2025. In 2024, estimates were predicting a record number of German tourists over the season, with flight bookings up 7% despite some routes being cut and Germans making up at least half of all foreign tourists for the months of November to March. However, twelve months on, this picture is vastly different. In 2025, the forecast is expected to fall by around 10% based on airline scheduling. In September, the Spanish association for airline time slots, AECFA, announced a 13% reduction in flights to Palma and a 9% cut in the number of seats. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has now reported a 9.8% decline in airline bookings from Germany to the Balearics, with the vast majority (90%) being to Majorca. Spain’s Turespaña tourism institute has attributed the slump to various issues that have plagued the island in recent months. The institute stated that the German market, which had contracted by two years, is now beginning to show “signs of selective pressure,” indicating a preference for competing destinations with lower prices, such as Egypt.
