Once hailed as a solution to desertification in Ethiopia, the non-native Prosopis tree has become a major problem, causing harm to delicate ecosystems and endangering local communities. Originally brought to the northeastern Afar region in the 1970s, the Prosopis, native to Latin America, has now spread uncontrollably. For livestock farmer Khadija Humed, the tree has brought nothing but hardship. She stated, ‘Because of this plant, we have become poor.’ Initially, the tree seemed beneficial, with its heat resistance and fast growth meant to prevent soil erosion and provide shade in the dry lowlands of Afar.
