Think Tank Urges COP30 and BRICS to Prioritize Tibet’s Worsening Climate Crisis

The Stockholm Center for South Asian and Indo-Pacific Affairs (SCSA-IPA) at the Institute for Security and Development Policy (ISDP) is pushing for Tibet’s escalating climate emergency to be a central issue in global climate governance. The delegation led by Jagannath Panda and Richard Ghiasy emphasized the urgent need for COP30 and BRICS nations to formally recognize Tibet as a critical ecological hotspot. With the Tibetan Plateau warming at an alarming rate, nearly three times faster than the global average, it is crucial for attention to be directed towards this region. Despite COP30’s focus on Amazon conservation, Indigenous rights, and sustainable development, the SCSA-IPA highlighted Tibet’s underrepresentation, given rapid glacial melt and permafrost loss that impact billions in South and Southeast Asia.
