Is Labubu Trending Coming to an End? Sony Ventures into Movies

Labubu, the quirky toys with sharp teeth and big ears, have become a sensation. Sony Pictures Ventures is now venturing into creating Labubu movies, taking inspiration from the trending toy. The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Sony Pictures Ventures has secured the rights to bring the character into silver screens. There aren’t any other details available about the film, but Sony is eager to bring this popular character into theaters, whether it’s in action or animation genres.

In 2015, Hong Kong filmmaker Kasing Lung, the creator of the small creature with various features like Mokkoko, Pato, Spooki, Taikokoko, Simomo, brought these characters to life. These characters have unique eyes, noses, mouths, and shells, adding an element of mystery and excitement to the scenario. According to Lung, the character of Labubu was inspired by the times of dinosaurs when children used to live in forests.

In 2019, Lung signed a deal with the Chinese company Pop Mart to commercialize Labubu’s playsets and figures. Pop Mart is now releasing Labubu’s playsets with unique features on their shelves. While Lung’s story features multiple Labubus, Pop Mart offers various Labubu playsets on their shelves.

Labubu gained fame in the Asian market, spreading its popularity to the United States and online platforms. The mystery surrounding the toy has captivated a global audience, making it a unique addition to collections. The involvement of celebrities such as Lis from Blackpink, Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, David Beckham, and even Bollywood stars has further catapulted Labubu into the realm of admiration.
