Esthetician Alice Martins Alves, a 33-year-old transgender woman who died last Sunday (9) 18 days after being assaulted by two employees of the ‘Rei do Pastel’ bar in Savassi, in the Centro-Sul region of Belo Horizonte, had rated the establishment with one star about three months ago. In her review, the woman stated, ‘the attendant was extremely aggressive’ and that she was almost assaulted. ‘I was only spared because I sat with other girls who were providing proof,’ she said. Alice also mentioned that the employee claimed she hadn’t paid the bill and that she ‘would have to pay anyway or wouldn’t leave’. ‘Heavy place and somewhat dubious attendants… Anyway, I won’t return,’ she stated. Alice, however, returned to the bar on October 23 and, when she left the establishment to go home, she was approached by two employees who beat her. They only stopped because a motorcyclist intervened and called the Military Police and the Emergency Medical Service (Samu).
On the day of the assault, Alice was treated at an Emergency Care Unit (UPA) and released. At home, she continued to experience severe pain and went to a private hospital in Contagem, in Greater BH, on October 26. She had broken ribs and other serious injuries, including a perforated intestine. On November 9, Alice passed away in a private hospital in Betim, in Greater BH. Her health deteriorated over the days, she lost 10kg, had difficulty eating, and suffered intense pain.
The two employees of ‘Rei do Pastel’ have been identified, and the police are searching for them. The Civil Police is also investigating whether there was any transphobia involved.
