Court upholds validity of the vote on the Copasa Referendum PEC in the ALMG

The Justice of Minas Gerais denied the request of state deputy Bella Gonçalves (PSOL) to suspend the vote on PEC 24/2023 in the Minas Gerais State Legislative Assembly (ALMG), which had approved the end of the requirement for a popular referendum on the privatization of the Minas Gerais Sanitation Company (Copasa).
In the injunction filed by the parliamentarian, she claimed that the passage of the text presented irregularities, especially during the special committee between the voting rounds in the plenary. Among the allegations were the rejection of 273 amendments presented by the opposition and the registration of deputy Bruno Engler’s vote after the apparent end of the vote.

The judge responsible for the case considered that it was not specifically indicated which internal rules of the ALMG had been violated. The ruling mentions that the House’s president acted in accordance with a previous internal understanding and that it was not up to the special committee or the presidency to individually verify the authenticity of the 273 rejected amendments.
